it just doesn't quite add up.
As much as it kills us to critique this masterpiece, we're committed to equal-opportunity song correction. And in this hauntingly beautiful melody, unfortunately, the dwarves of the Misty Mountains contradict themselves. The dwarves sing about their "long forgotten gold," but this doesn't make a lot of sense, because how could the gold be forgotten if there's a song about it? (One that they've all clearly sung before, at that.) One could argue that these particular dwarves are the only ones who really remember, but that can't be true, either. At another point in the film, they all talk about how Smaug hasn't been spotted in 60 years and that they need to hurry over to Erebor before others turn their sights on it. And then, of course, five whole armies show up trying to get the treasure later. Just seems like it's not really that forgotten (sorry, Tolkien), but this song is still legendary.
LYRICS
Far over the misty mountains cold To dungeons deep, and caverns old We must away, 'ere break of day To find our long forgotten gold The pines were roaring on the height The winds were moaning in the night The fire was red, it flaming spread The trees like torches blazed with light |
