WHERE DOES THIS SONG GO WRONG?
This song is a banger, but we just couldn't get past the contradiction Katy Perry makes. She repeatedly describes her lover as being both "supernatural" AND "extraterrestrial." Supernatural, on the one hand, refers to an event or manifestation that is "attributed to some force beyond scientific understanding or the laws of nature." Extraterrestrial, however, refers to a being that is "of or from outside the earth or its atmosphere." If this lover is indeed extraterrestrial, it just means that he has originated on another planet—he's just an alien. Science does not preclude the existence of aliens, and under the laws of nature, the existence of aliens is perfectly possible. If the lover is supernatural, he exists outside of the laws of nature and defies our scientific understanding. It is possible that Katy Perry is implying that this individual is a supernatural alien (like the ghost of a Martian), that could be okay, we guess. Or she's saying that supernatural mysteries are indeed explained by science, but the scientific knowledge of the human race is currently insufficient to establish this link, and that these enigmas may exist outside of earth or its atmosphere. But we're not so sure she is.
